Even as massage therapy becomes more widely recognized in healthcare, it’s still common for people to see it as “just relaxation.” But massage is a clinical, evidence-supported modality with real therapeutic benefits. So why is it still overlooked?
A lot of it comes down to perception.
For decades, massage was marketed as a luxury service—spa robes, aromatherapy, and stress relief. While relaxation is beneficial, it overshadowed the deeper clinical work that therapists are trained to do.
Another big factor is education.
Most people don’t realize how much anatomy, physiology, and assessment goes into skilled bodywork. When someone experiences a session that feels more like light rubbing than targeted treatment, they assume that’s what massage is. In reality, techniques can be incredibly precise and powerful.
Insurance plays a role too.
When something isn’t covered by insurance, it’s easy for people to write it off as optional or non-medical. But research shows massage helps with pain reduction, increased mobility, improved circulation, and nervous system regulation.
And then there’s massage’s identity crisis.
It lives in both the holistic and medical worlds. Some use it for relaxation and stress relief, others for injury recovery and chronic pain. This versatility is a strength—but it can also make the public unsure of where massage “fits” in their care plan.
Yet despite being overlooked, massage continues to fill a crucial gap in healthcare:
hands-on, personalized care that addresses soft tissue dysfunction and supports the whole person—body, mind, and nervous system.
